A harp seal pup called a whitecoat seeks shelter from the relentless winds that roar across the sea ice covering the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Quebec, Canada. The pups are born on the ice in late February and nursed for 12-15 days before its mother leaves to mate and migrate Northward. The pups stay on the ice relying on their fat reserve until they enter the sea to learn how to swim and hunt for their first meal.
